In search on the Cheese
Andre, Lance, Pop, Clive, Ron, Colin ‘the Leg’, Stuart.
From a 10am start from the Keel, we set off keeping away from motorways. We had to navigate through the mass of urban sprawl via Bretton, Flockton, skirting around Huddersfield to Ainley top then out alongside the Rochdale Canal and to Hebdon Bridge which was the start point of the scenic part of the ride. We took a 5 minute break to allow circulation to return and then set off up the hill on Lee Wood Road then onto Widdop Road across really good ‘back’ roads towards Brierfield. We passed through Sabden on the Clitheroe Road and bypassing Clitheroe itself by riding a small length of the A59 and turning off towards Slaildburn, but at Grindleton had the misfortune to get stuck behind two large tractors on the narrow roads who got stuck trying to get past parked cars. After a short delay and riding some great roads we stopped for a buttie and tea at Slaidburn. From Slaidburn we rode northwards on the Lythe Fell Road in beautiful sunshine through Bentham towards Ingleton.
Crossing the A65 we made our way past the ribblehead viaduct to Hawes and the Wensleydale Creamery where Lance sampled a weeks supply of various cheeses.
The route home took us through Gayle and over the top through Oughtershaw, Kettlewell, Burnsall, past Bolton Abbey and back onto the A65 for the ride home through the rush hour traffic in Bradford the M62, M1 and home.
In all 175 miles starting at 10am and finishing at 6:15pm.
Hopefully tired smiles all round.
